Post subject: | Engine won't start |
I have a 73 225 that I finally finished putting the motor back together. First some background. The motor was running when I took it apart basically all I was planning to do was putting a Super Six intake and carb set up on it. Well making a long story short I cleaned, painted and did some rewireing to make the engine look and run better. The block and head were not touched only the intake and exhaust were removed and replaced. The bad part about this is the car has been sitting for a little over a year due to various problems making me unable to finish putting it back together until today when I decieded to get it done. Here's whats happening. I do have gas flow, I first cranked the motor over with no plugs and fuel line going into clear bottle to see if and when gas was flowing to my surprise this happened fairly quickly. Hooked line to fresh rebuilt carb. Next I put in new spark plugs. With fresh battery I started cranking away slowly pumping carb until I knew it was flowing gas. Then after some cranking and not even a hint that it would start I checked to see if I had gas going to the cyls by pulling some plugs and they were wet. So next I checked to see if I had spark by pulling a couple of more plugs and cranking motor to see if they were sparking and they were. Put plugs back in. But with more cranking the engine did not give one hint that it might start. So there's where I,m at, sorry it was a long read and if anybody has any suggestions they would be appreciated. |

How old is the gas in the tank? |

The rewire was just repairing a couple of cracked wires ie green alt near clip and replaced choke wire. I guess I did not need to mention it. Gas was in car when parked but shortly after I knew the car might be sitting for awhile I put in some fuel stabilizer. Also before trying to start it I put in about 3 gallons of fresh gas and gave the car a good shake. I did also pour some fresh gas down the carb but there was still no hint of starting |

Was the distributor removed or repositioned at any point? DD |

No on the distributor. The only parts removed and replaced was the intake, exhaust and carb. |

i'm banking on the carb. rebuilt? shop or did you do the rebuild? the engine might be flooding. too much gas, no bang inside. what kind of carb is it? when you operate the throttle manually do you see gas squirt into the throttle blades (are they opening as well?) |

Yeah…exactly what wiring did you change, and how?

Carb was shop rebuild and yes gas is squirting when pumping and bottom blades are opening. Well I was just messing with it just now and found out that now I have no spark. So when I have the time I will have to find out why because it had spark when I first tryed to get it running. Obviously she's mad at me for letting her sit so long and she's going to make me work to get her running. I guess I'll have to start checking the ignition system. Thanks for all your help. |

Post subject: | Please help, I love this boat but it wont work |
I am having similar problem with my boat. Throttle pump is working, fresh gas. valve lash is set (I set it to the best of my ability). I don't think spark is problem but....How does one check for spark? By removing a plug and grounding and making visual observation? I am sure the timing and carb. adjustment is off also, just in case...where can i buy a new two barrel carb.? For a boat with an early 70's motor. thank you helping a guy with enough knowledge to be dangerous |

You need to see if it is getting spark which can be done by removing the coil wire from dist and getting it close to ground and cranking engine.I don't think spark is problem but....How does one check for spark? Post subject: | problem (marine specific) solved |
the firing order is different from the usual automotive order. I moved the wires to the right spots and it fired right up. Thank you for the help. |

Huh? Please share more details about this special marine firing order and cam. Never heard that the marine motors had different cams and firing orders.
