Post subject:  Blown turbo oil seal or bearing weakening?

Hi Folks,

Oil smoke... Looking for advice.

The situation: I have about 10k miles on my Turbonetics T60-1 setup on the 68 Dart. It is now making some oil smoke after even mild acceleration, but more after I let up after some boost. It looks like droplets of oil are hitting the trunklid, so it is likely oil getting past the seal and going into the exhaust pipe. I did two hard boost pulls yesterday and the smoke appears to be getting worse. I could not detect any drop in power or boost, and it mostly made smoke after I let up.

It started as mild smoke on my 1000 mile trip on Friday in 105 deg heat, so maybe I toasted something in the turbo? I was not pushing it hard for most of the day - only a few times into boost to pass people.

Any ideas, advice, experiences? I plan to call Turbonetics and/or G-pop shop soon. I will be miffed if this thing only lasted 10k miles.

Much appreciated in advance for your help,

Lou

Lou I'd start with your oil return make sure it's still free and clear and flowing properly

Hmm, and maybe the crankcase breather system?

I just got up, so I might be slightly more retarded than usual....

I had to send my pte6262 back to precision almost within a week or two of startup it got a ton of shaft play and was scratching the housing I was shocked considering I bought it brand new
They fixed it for free so they are still cool with me, i'd call turbonetics ask about the smoke ask about the 10k mile maybe they can work out a deal with you?

Thanks for the input, guys. I think I may have found the culprit. I made the dire mistake of buying one of those Mr. Gasket "baffled" grommets at Advance and it was not open (thin rubber covering the opening). I think the breather was not allowing breathing. I cut a hole in it before leaving MO, and I saw no smoke on the way to WI. I haven't leaned on it really hard yet. Still responds as it has before.

Will report more later. I will look at the oil return too - thanks Mr. Toad.

Cheers,

Lou

Sounds good lou keep us posted I had a similar problem happen to me but I made the mistake of automatically going to the turbo and I got the bright idea to rebuild the turbo myself and ended up damaging the the turbo when truth be told my drain line couldn't keep up with the feed go figure

Did a bunch of WOT blasts today and no smoke at all. Breather grommet plugged was the culprit. Car feels pretty nice at high speeds...

No Speed Week this year. I found Speed Week 2011 less enjoyable than the 2010 World Finals and it was a lot more money too. Are you staying in a hotel?

Thanks for the notes, Josh. I have no hotel plans, but was just going to show up and camp or something. Guess I'll look into lodging.
