Short tailshaft has only one mounting boss for the shifter assembly near the end (A/F body), long tail typically has two mounting points, or only one close to the front (B/C/E/truck/van). O/D units have a bigger flange around the input bearing (where the shaft goes into the front of the trans.) @5.125". Also, the shift lever closest to the front of the trans. points down on an O/D trans., up on a non O/D. That info and much more is covered in the article Josh linked to. |

Yep just measure the front bearing retainer, IF its a hair over 5" then its OD. (if the shifter arms are not on it) If its less than 5" its a NON-O/D trans... |

That is mostly true...but if someone wanted to install a normal A-833 into the OD Bellhousing, and swapped a Bearing Retainer from a 1976+ 3spd (like the A-230....Mopar didn't want to redrill the last of the 3 speeds so they have small bolt retainer pattern like the normal 833 and early 903/745...)...then the bearing retainer OD would be 5.125" and the tranny would be a normal 4 speed..-D.Idiot |
