I took this photo this afternoon to illustrate missalignment of the combustion chamber to the bore. On this particular engine, the head is slightly to the passenger's side on one end. Number one has the worst allignment, number six is nearly perfect. The head is also slightly forward of center, which with oversize valves can result in the valve interference with the bore should the head be cut for compression and/or high valve lift is employed. Always check for allignment of the chambers when building a performance engine!

The phone camera didn't do a good job of showing it, but there is a very pronounced ring ridge on this 170 engine. It's getting a 0.100" Overbore so it really doesn't matter.

So how are you going to fix the alignment?

Standard procedure is to enlarge the head-to-block alignment dowel holes (in the head) so the head can be shifted relative to the block, then carefully shift the head in the relevant directions and make alignment marks across the head/block junction (for example with a rotary cutter in a Dremel tool) on all four sides of the head/block. Then once the finished head is ready to go on the finished block with the gasket, you carefully line up all four alignment marks before snugging down the head bolts.

Where would one purchase a 0.100â€￾ or other oversized bore head gasket for a slant?

Felpro or about any aftermarket gaskets are 3.510" or bigger. I have some 3.55" aussie ACL gaskets I could sell. Best is Permaseal Aussie gasket 3.66", but hard to get from here. I may do a group buy at some point.

Building a 170? Stroker 170? For what car?

Is the block drilled wrong or is the head drilled wrong?

All the valves and bolt holes will likely be within spec as will the bolts and cylinder bores relative to the dowel holes. Its the unmachined features that are going to be out of sorts like the chamber itself. You could probably test fit 4 or 5 different heads on the block and find some that are better aligned. Since you are dealing with a casting, core shift or other variables could be affecting this.
