I have an intake that ive been trying to have my friends dad weld a mounting plate for a 2bbl on to. The problem is, is that it has a lot of magnesium in it and we dont know how much, so that he can get the right rod. It is an 85' one piece 1bbl truck manifold. Its been sitting in his shop for 2 months because we don't know what rod to use. Does anyone know what rod to use or the percentage of magnesium in it.? Id much appreciate it.

UIGM, zero percent magnesium. If it's not cast iron, it's aluminum.

Sorry forgot to mention it is aluminum, but is not 100% aluminum in the material.

If you decide not to weld you can hold the plate to the manifold with an epoxy glue and a fair few studs/bolts. If you use the search function or the articles ( can't remember which ) you will find what I mean. I did it with great results and it cost me around $15.

Yeah I know. I just wanted to weld it so I could sand and polish the intake so itd have that nice polished aluminum look.

It should be 356 alloy but knowing the ways of high volume foundry work... it's likely a "bastard" alloy... developed by remelting everything they had on hand at the time.

If you are going for shiny, you could try a chrome powder coat.

Thanks Doc!

Reed, I may do that if I can't weld it. I just wanted it to have a natural look and I dont really like chrome.
