Post subject:  904 started making a squealing/whistling noise in Drive or R

I installed a Transgo 2 shift kit, put in fresh synthetic type F fluid and a deeper steel pan. The trans worked great for several thousand miles, and I love the kit.

THe other day, I began to hear a squealing noise much like the noise a dull drill bit makes when being pushed into a hole with no lubricant. It sounds like a bearing is spinning and stopping the spinning again. It goes away the minute I put it in park or nuetral.

When this happens, I can feel a slight drag on the car when I move it; but the car still drives and operates normally?

Any ideas on what makes a noise like this but only in forward or reverse.

Clutches going out possibly. I have found this diagram extremely useful in diagnosing transmission problems:

I suspect the type F fluid has been doing something naughty to your bands and clutches.

Contrary to ill-informed folk wisdom, type-F fluid is not a wise choice. See here.

I got this Type F fluid on sale at the local parts store. http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=52&pcid=9

I looked at the chart, but can't determine which circuit is both engauged while in any forward gear AND reverse.

The noise is a metalic squeaking sound similar to an alternator bearing gone dry and starting to sieze up. It goes away the second the trans is shifted back into neutral or park.

My guess is that the type F fluid has contaminated and degraded all your bands and/or clutches and they are making noise and slipping when they are supposed to hold firm.

When you have the trans shifted into D or R, does the trans make the noise only when the car is moving, or does it do it when completly stopped, even when still in gear? Does it make the noise in all forward gears, or does it stop, or change pitch in a certain gear? I'd be certain the flex plate bolts are tight, also, obtain an inch-pound torque wrench, and at least adjust the kick-down band to FACTORY SPECS. I'm not very fond of Trans-go's method of adjusting the bands. It's possible the combo of type "F" fluid and a very harsh shift kit like the TF-2 COULD kill off a worn, high mileage trans, but it could still be something simple, unrelated to the changes you've made.

I'll have some time to check these things out this weekend and get back to you. I did flog the car pretty hard at Willow Springs just before Spring Fling this year.
Even after installing the shift kit, the transmission did not shift that hard. It just felt like a normal shift. The nicest thing about the Transgo 2 was being able to drop it intoo 1st gear at speed.

That might help to explain the transmission's apparently damaged present condition.
