| Post subject: | Carb heat shield / insulater |
Needed or not. I'm finishing up my super six build, .060 over bore, .060 head mill, larger stainless valves, comp cam kit, carter 2bbl. Just missing a piece of the kick down linkage. Anyhow it seems to be running great without it, ( the heat sheild) and sounds awesome. I did order one that just arrived, but Is it really needed.? Car is a 74 dart swinger. |

It depends if you like hearing your starter crank after a 15 to 20 minute heat soak on a hot day. My 74 starts immediately in the first split second. Turn the key and bang.......it's running. Your call. Click on the red link below my name to view pictures. |

Yes you need it. BBD's are bad about heatsoaking anyway because the fuel bowl sits on top of the manifold, instead of hanging over to the side like a Holley 1920 or 2300. |

Don'tchya believe it. Those two carburetors are every bit as prone to heat soak and percolation as anything Carter (or Stromberg or Rochester or Motorcraft) ever built.(Yes, you definitely want to put in a heat shield.) |

I'm just making an observation from what I have experienced. My BBD was a great carb, but heat soaked really bad even after experimenting from different float levels and different heat insulators. Yes I had the thick gasket between the carb and manifold. The edelbrock 500 I had on the truck for a while did the same thing. I have a Holley 2300 on it now and the heat soak problems have been greatly reduced. I'm not saying that the BBD is a bad carb or that Holley makes a better carb. |

Well I actually have two now one is a mopar marine shield the other is a aftermarket thick composite material. Not sure witch one to install. |

I also rigged up my own piece for the kick down linkage I was missing seems to be working good so far, only a few laps on motor now though. I plan on installing one of the heat shield tomorrow. |

Are you saying you have a factory heat shield for a BBD? I wasn't even aware of such a thing, anybody have some solid info. Would love to have pictures or even better a good trace with dimensions!

Well I actually found them on ebay, the marine one is in mopar packaging and the other is aftermarket. The marine one is half the thickness of the aftermarket. If were talking about the same thing I dont mind sketching demintions of it for you guys. (The spacer that goes between the 2bbl carb. and the intake.) I will try and post picks later today im just not sure how to, Ive been trying to load some of my car project pics as well. |
