I am in the process of rebuilding a 79 lockup 904. It is being rebuilt as we speak.......

Is the rumor true that lockup 904's will not last very long compared to a non lockup 904? It has been suggested that the lockup clutch debris is a contributing factor. If so, will changing the filter every year help?
Would a deeper pan help?

Any special considerations on fluid type for best longevity?
I have always used Dexron III.

I just bumped up two of my old trans posts for you. Be sure you have the late'79-up lock-up module,unless you like 25 MPH bull riding lessons check the line pressure adjustment,try to obtain a black accumulator spring. An inline filter can be added to the front cooler fitting, to stop debris from wipping out the bearings. Use the oil recomended by the the torque con. vender

I ordered two of the Magnefine 5/16 transmission filters, one for each line. Hopefully that will reduce the debris, keep the bearings happy and increase the longevity of the lockup 904.

I will check with ABC Transmission in Tacoma on which oil they recommend.

Their 3 year, 50,000 mile warranty is based on using Dexron III and a bottle of Lube Guard.

Interesting. For what it is worth, a few years back I purchased a 904T out of an 83 Dodge van at the Lakewood Pull-a-Part. When i got it, I discovered it had a new torque converter and yellow wax pencil writing on the top of the trans, "Use Dexron III and red lube guard." The transmission had a new gasket sticking out from between the tailhousing and main case, so I figured it had been rebuilt at some point. The transmission worked OK, but had a nasty shudder around 30-35 MPH. I chased that shudder for a while before I finally tore the transmission down and discovered all of the clutches in one of the clutch packs (can't remember if it was front or rear) were completely worn out.

Was the trans rebuild by ABC? I don't know. Did the Lube Guard contribute or hinder the failure of the clutches? I couldn't say. However, I am leery of any shop that refuses to give a warranty unless you use some kind of additive in the trans.

+1. A transmission shop making its warranty conditional on the use of an obsolete transmission fluid and a bottle of mouse milk: what a load of poo.
Quite a marketeering job those LubeGuard people do.

I'd be more likely to pin the tail on the transmission shop. The LubeGuard people aggressively market their stuff to transmission shops.
