So tonight I was lucky enough to snatch a Super Six intake and Carter BBD (casting has 0-2543 on the side) along with the kickdown linkage (the kickdown linkage from a van will work right)! However, I've got a few questions about the carb and my options for throttle cables.

First the carb. The fast idle cam is plastic and torn up pretty good and was zip-tied in place, the choke was setup with a manual choke and doesn't look quite right. Also there is an interesting device mounted on top of the float bowl that seems to electronically operates the throttle? No vacuum pull-off and just some funky stuff going on. Never played with a BBD but this one doesn't look like the one in my '66 FSM and not quite like the ones seen in the various articles. It looks like a later style BBD with the tall accelerator pump chamber, but missing things I expect and having others I didn't.

So given the less than great condition of the carb, should I look for something else? Maybe swap the throttle plates onto a 318 BBD that is in good shape? Or is there a go-to sequential 2bbl carb for a stock-mild slant?

The Super Six article mentions throttle cable conversions for for '66 or earlier owners (which I am). So I'm also looking at later A/F/M body donors, but will their throttle cables bolt up just as easily as a '64-'66 V8 throttle cable?

Also what do others do to clean the intake manifold? I want to get all the paint, rust, and oil/gas off it, then repaint.

The kickdown linkage from a van actually might not work. Van Super Six kickdown rods were shaped differently to clear the van-style gearshift linkage. I know a car kickdown linkage won't work on a van, and I doubt a van kickdown linkage will work on a car. I might have a car Super Six linkage or you can run a cable style linkage.

That carb doesn't sound worth any effort or time. You can get a brand new Holley 2280 configured for slant-6 use for $140 on eBay, see here. You will need to swap to a cable-type accelerator pedal; the A-body '64-'66 V8/'65-'66 slant-6 with factory A/C setup is "correct" for the car but relatively hard to find -- another option is to retrofit a later hanging type pedal. Short throttle cable for the 2bbl slant-6 installation is same as the V8 cable and is available. Kickdown needs to be car/truck; the van variety won't work (if you have a van-type kickdown, please PM me and let's work out a trade). You'll need a 2bbl air cleaner of one variety or another, too, and a 2bbl choke unit (#1232 Electric choke kit).

Thanks guys good stuff!

I'd be willing to trade my van linkage for the car variety. So if Reed isn't interested then I'll send you a PM Dan.

Thanks for the link Dan!

To answer your cleaning question, you can either take it to a machine shop for a vat bath, or maybe have a friend with a blast cabinet, blast it. Not knowing how rusty, or how much paint is on it.

Another good cheap cleaning technique is to use heavy-duty oven cleaner, which will eat away paint, grease, grime, carbon, rust, etc. Only do this if the manifold is iron. If it's aluminum, the oven cleaner will eat it away!
