Pat is a great guy, and is good to deal with. Its also nice he stepped in and is preserving a cool vintage hotrodding icon like Sharp/Wilcap.

"Ed: We have done the Slant 6 to the Chevy auto but it has not been a popular adapter. Price is $650 with flexplate, hub spacer, fasteners, instructions and of course the plate. Uses the later SB Mopar starter Not included and needs to be modified slightly). Photo attached.
Thanks and spread the word."

That is great news! I called Wilcap a few months back and they said that others made this and that I should call around. I turned up nuttin back then and never called Wilcap back.

I am looking at using this trans on at least one upcoming swap.

Should we try to gauge interest for some sort of group buy? I am in for at least one, maybe two. The price may go down.

Thanks again,

Lou

Is it physically smaller/lighter than an A-500?

Yes, and parts are plentiful.

I would be interested if a group buy with a better price could be arranged.

aftermaket suport is great becuase of the grand national and there are some guys that bolt them to bigblock BOP,cadillac aswell so a good trans to use in a street/strip car. just a little longer than a 350 turbo trans to

Yes, this looks like a very nice swap. Does anyone have a preferred source for these trannys or a hi perf rebuilder?

The A500 is just huge and heavy and not such a great trans. Mine has been holding up to 300+HP drag passes, though.

Ouch. Maybe parts gathering for the OE stuff isnt so expensive after all.

If gas prices start to creep up again, this might be a good option for improving fuel economy. The Gear Vendors overdrive adds a 0.78:1 gear ratio and they claim a 22-28% (say 25%) improvement in fuel economy at highway speeds for a cost of $2795.

Assuming I get 23 mpg (Imperial) or 19 mpg (US) and gasoline costs $1.30/litre ($4.92/US gallon), a 25% increase in fuel economy for a cost of $2795 has a payback of 54,387 miles for the GV overdrive.

The 200R4 gear ratios compare with the A904 (early & wide ratio):
  • 1st - 2.74 vs 2.45 vs 2.74
  • 2nd - 1.57 vs 1.45 vs 1.54
  • 3rd - 1.00 vs 1.00 vs 1.00
  • 4th - 0.67
It looks like the 200R4 has comparable gear ratios as the later wide ratio A904 with a much higher OD ratio than GV. I would expect that it should also offer an even better fuel economy improvement over the GV overdrive. My Barracuda has 2.76:1 axle & P195/75R14 tires and it runs around 2500 RPM @ 60 mph but should run at 2185 RPM locked-up. A 0.67:1 overdrive would drop that to 1464 RPM, which is around where my 5.7L 02 Camaro cruises on the highway.

Assuming I get 23 mpg (Imperial) or 19 mpg (US) and gasoline costs $1.30/litre ($4.92/US gallon), a 25% increase in fuel economy for a cost of $1500 (WAG for adapter & tranny) has a payback of 29,188 miles for the 200R4.

Post subject:  More thoughts and measurements on OD and LU trannys

Thanks for the calculations and thoughts, Frank.

My real world experience with the A500 lockup was that fuel economy is 2-3 MPG better vs. a similarly geared 904 (non-LU). I would call this 10-15% and no better (mild/medium performance 150-180 HP engine). Going from a 904 (non-LU) to my T5 manual is worth 15-20% in MPG (250 HP engine).

The GV folks are smoking crack if they think a 0.78 OD with no LU will get you 25%. I'd say 5-10% would be more like it, IF you did not change your rear gear (say 3.23 and then with OD you get 2.52).

I am looking at the 200-4R as a way to put a well supported OD+LU into my new 64 Valiant, and if that works well, maybe replace the huge, heavy, and poorly supported A500 in the 68 turbo Dart.

I like where this is going...

Hey Doc!

We need to add "Swap in a 200-4R" to the "Road Trip List" for when I come and get that '61 Valiant Wagon...

Art Carr transmissions, did a artical in Hot Rod all about the 200R4 and why he likes them better than the 700R4. This was a few years ago but may be in their arkives. ?
