Post subject:  Oil pick-up dented

I was swapping motors into Denny's truck and when I removed his truck pan and pick up I found the pick up tube dented in pretty bad. Is it possible that this is normal or factory? I don't think so but this is the 1st truck pan I have taken off. I was planning on installing the pan tonight and installing the motor tomorrow. But if this is not Ok I will need to wait.

Anyone have one that you could UPS to me?

Thanks Rick

Well, no rush but I'd still like to know what you think. But, I just removed the old pan gasket and cleaned it up and then I took a look inside. I have kind of got used to looking at the cam gears and oil pump gears when I have the pan off an engine. Guess what?

Yes, the dreaded MP camshaft/ oil pump gear failure hits again. This is a .460 lift cam and it has the oil pump gear worn almost half way through the teeth. So I guess i will need to have a cam re-ground before this one can go anywhere!

This makes 3 that I have personally seen. Two that Ryan and I put together and they were .528 versions and this engine that he bought with the .460 lift.

Depressed just a bit!

I've got the engine out of my truck apart at the moment and the pickup does not have a dent in it. Almost looks like yours has bopped the crank at one point.

Sounds like its time to send your cam to OCG, and get one of the oil pumps from Doc with the case hardened gear.

Yes, I thought maybe it was hit by the crank but it doesn't have any scrape marks across it.

Thanks Jeb.

Anyone have a pick up for the rear sump truck they want to part with?

That part is NOT correct for both an 83 Cordoba AND an 83 van. Those vehicles used very different oil pans and oil pickup tubes.

its always buyer be-ware,, I would contact the vendor and get an actual photo,
but the 22414157 Sealed Power part number cross checks on the Rock Auto web site as a truck pan oil pick up,,so there is hope!

the 23 and change is a nice price

to see it in person, O Reilly has it for 27 and change

I know I have one and a matching pan. Interested in either or both? A car pan and pickup can be used on the truck and van engines. You will have uber clearance between the k-frame and the block.

I believe that is a factory clearance dent to clear the crank. The oil pickup I have from a 1983 van 225 has the exact same dent in the exact same spot.

Have you located the shrapnel from the cam yet? Is it in the filter?

No not really. I didn't spend anymore time on it because the whole engine was getting replaced. The engine was run until it was pretty tight, so it is toast. I will say that I did not find a whole lot in the pan.

This is weird, I looked my oil pickup all over and it doesn't have a dent. Figure they would all be the same since they are all trucks.
