| Post subject: | Which Manual Transmission? |
Just curious what those of you with somewhat mofified or highly modified slant 6's are running for manual transmissions. I'm considering building my engine for street use so want performance but with economy in mind as well. Obviously rear-end gearing comes into play too but I'm mainly interested in transmissions here. The 833 4-speed seems obvious but is anyone running a non-Mopar 5-speed or a modifed Mopar 4-speed? Thanks, - EM |

You might try the "search" function on this site, as many swaps have been discussed. The OD 833 can be a nice bolt-in option. I am running a Mustang GT (79-93) T5 trans behind my 250 HP Slant. Have had it in there since 2002. Lou |

Thanks Lou. I just found this site so am doing some looking around now. I would love to hear more about your set-up in terms of the pieces you used and any mods you needed to do other than obvious cross member and driveshaft changes. For example did you use an aluminum 833 OD bell housing and modify it to fit the Ford transmission flange and bolt pattern? What about the spline count and how that matched up to your slant crankshaft and clutch? Thanks much. |

Performance an economy is a really fine line depending on what you are looking for in either subject... If you are looking to improve mileage then you are wanting the transmission with an Overdrive to get the most out of highway cruising, the bolt in is the A-833OD or a modded bellhousing and the T-5. The only downside on the A-833OD is the wide spacing in the ratios, this can mean a signifigant drop in rpm between the gears (which may not be a problem driving, but drag racing it can be problematic keeping the engine in it's power band depending on the build). You'll have to define performance: just some mild mods and a change to a kinder rear ratio? 10:1 compression an trying for about 1hp per cube? One thing to note is the aluminum case on the A-833OD may not take the hammering of repeated high HP hard pulls in OD (one of the reasons I've gone to the 1975 iron cased unit in my Hpak Duster)...this is another reason the T-5 is of great interest to the group when approaching this subject. -D.Idiot |

I really like the idea of a 5-speed given that it would give performance (first through 4th) and economy/cruising (5th). The 4 speed overdrive does the same but with one less gear. I'm hoping tha Lou will chime-in with some details on his set up. Thanks again. - EM |
