Thought maybe it was the carb., continuing to dump gas so swapped back to the rebuilt carter which I dont care for... the manual choke. Same results. Could the points cause pinging? |

Where is the initial timing set? How much total timing is the engine getting? Is the vacuum advance hooked-up to a ported vacuum souce? DD |

Incorrectly adjusted points will cause a change in timing. Set the points using a dwell tach and then get your timing correct. Switching to elecyronic ignition is a good upgrade. |

Dump gas where? Quote: Could the points cause pinging?
Not unless they are so badly out of adjustment that they are causing the timing to be too early -- this is not usually the case; as points wear the timing tends to retard, not advance. Pinging is caused by excessive spark advance, spark plugs running too hot (what exact spark plugs have you got, and what year engine is this?), built-up carbon in the combustion chambers, exhaust restriction, and/or inoperative EGR on an engine so equipped. An electronic ignition swap, as Sandy mentions, is an excellent upgrade. |

The timing is 2.5 btd as for the year of engine never was able to find out ,2806830-4 When I turn key off she continues to run.The engine is set properly and thought it was carb.Only thing I didnt replace was points.Electronic ignition is definetly on wish list.Im going by 2.5 btd cause thats what the 66 engine I replaced called for ? |

Didnt look at plugs cause the engine purrs when I put her in and got a great deal from one of the members. Will check into replacing them and if you have any suggestions as to which brand to go with that would help cause the one article I was reading left me scratching whats left of my hair. Champions were in other engine. |

This part number signifies a post-68 motor.

2.5 BTDC might have been correct for the motor you took out, but it isn't necessarily correct for the motor you put in. Post the numbers stamped into the pad on top of the block behind the alternator where the head meets the block. I advise you to check for vibration dampener outer ring slippage. The outer ring can slip causing it to give an incorrect reading for setting base timing. |

F225 means this is a 1970 225 engine. The setting of 2½Â° BTDC should be fine, but yes, you need to check that the timing marks actually indicate TDC. Tune-up parts and technique suggestions in this thread. Pay special attention to the info on spark plugs and removing spark plug washers -- if you leave the metal ring washers on the spark plugs, they will run hotter than they're supposed to. Another cause of ping is oil getting into the combustion chambers. How much oil does this engine consume? |

Have been checking oil more than usual since I had problem with new motors oilpan not clearing kmember and had to replace with original motor oilpan and pickup. Not one drop of oil ,still clean and full. |

Engine "Run-on" after shut-off is usually caused by a high idle setting or the choke not coming-off completly. DD |

That's not pinging, it's "run-on" or "after-run" or "dieseling". It can be caused by too fast an idle setting, or a vacuum leak, or too-hot spark plugs (make sure they're correct and make sure no ring washers), or carbon buildup in the combustion chambers, or anything else that makes the engine run hotter than it should. What thermostat is installed? |

I think the thermostat was 195. And did have a chance to pull plugs and they were AC/delco. Swapped them with the champions and took her for a spin and she runs stronger .shut her down and no dieseling. Thanks again and when I get caught up with the doctor bills . Wife broke her knee cant send her to glue factory cause she has changed her tune about the old dodge. Will definetly send a donation love this site!!!! |

Replace with 180°, preferably Stant #45358.Quote: And did have a chance to pull plugs and they were
ACs are OK. Champions are poor quality. Use NGK plug number ZFR5N (stock number 3459). No word in your post on whether you removed the metal ring washers as directed.
AC/delco. Swapped them with the champions |
