I got my valves adjusted real nice on my 225 slant six and it is running nice and smooth and CLACK free, I didnt how ever have a timing light but I am setting it here in a few on lunch with a light. Will this effect my valve adjustment doing the timing AFTER? Next question is if it still wants to bog down and try to die IN DRIVE after setting the timing what are other possible causes of this? The pcv valve is working good I know that much after doing the valves. |

Use a timing setting of 5° before top dead centre, with the engine idling at 750 rpm and the vacuum advance hose disconnected from the distributor and plugged. It does not matter if you do the valve adjustment before or after setting the timing. Tune-up parts and technique suggestions in this thread. Carburetor operation and repair manuals and links to training movies and carb repair/modification threads are posted here for free download. |

thanks Dan, you Da Man, I used your link to do the valves while running and found a good youtube video to watch it being done, easy as pie. Plug the distributer hole and the carb both? |

Either pull the hose off the carb and put a cap on the nipple on the carb, or pull the hose off the distributor and put a cap (pencil?) in the end of the hose. Of course the hose should be checked for holes, cracks, and looseness at both ends. |

So we did the timing and when we had the vacume unplugged we got it rite at 5 degrees, when we plug the hose back to the carb (wich is a single barrel) we could see the timing line on the pulley was nowhere near the tab, it was showing up way below the tab on the distibuter side of the motor. But it was still idling smooth is that the norm? In drive it's still rough is there a low idle adjustment on the carb? |

Sounds like your not using the timed port. There should be no change plugged back in. You must find the timed port on your carb and use that......not a full time vacuum port. Full time is for the carb choke pull-off, heat control valve and vacuum gauge. My 1920 Holley timed vacuum port for the distributor shows no vacuum at 750 rpm. Just above 750 rpm it starts showing vacuum. Check the carb link SL6 Dan sent to identify the timed port for the distributor hose. Once you get it hooked up correctly, you will love the feel of the immediate engine pulling power. |

Ok then, after looking at the 1920 carb diagram it would appear that the distributer is hooked up to the air cleaner vacuum instead of the dist vacuum tube, looks like I am still dealing with lots of weird little things that sombody before me didnt know how to fix, this site and you guys are a godsend thanks a bunch, it keeps getting smoother with every fix I learn here. |

When I first got it and checked the breaks there wasnt even any adjusters or springs for the adjusters installed on the front breaks and only one rear was working, got those all worked out though I know my drum breaks in my sleep. |
