| Post subject: | 8 1/4 gear change |
Assuming the rest of the axle assembly is in good shape (axles, bearings, etc...), what parts will I need to swap an A-body 8 1/4 rear axle from a 2.2 gearset to a 3.2 gearset? I have a 3.2 ring, pinion, and carrier out of an early 70s Dodge van ready to go, but what else will I need/should I have on hand? Any special tools I will need to get the gears set up right? I have a magnetic base dial indicator, but will I need more? Thanks. |

How about an inch/pound torque wrench dial or beam type. Richard |

If anyone has a link to a how-to article on changing 8.25 gears, please share. |

You will also need a large& internal Hex tool to do the Lash adjustment.. I forget the size of the Hex - probably like 1.25" or something... I made one by getting an old pair of transverse tortion bars off of an FJM body donor car, cutting the bends of of them and then welding the 2 cut ends togther.. it's the correct size hex for the job, and will be a longer than the axle tube. I am not sure if you can get the spanner wrenches in there like you might use on an 8.75 Setup. Greg |

Uh oh. Thank's Greg. I will have to investigate that further once I get the axle up on my bench and can get a really good look at it. |
