I am in the process of replacing my right LBJ (excessive side to side play) with a new Moog ball joint. I can't get the boot seated as it seems to be a hair too small for the seat. Is there a trick to getting the boot seated properly on the ball joint? |

After all else fails, read the manual. I read the lower ball joint R&R section and the factory recommends using a 1-7/8" socket to press the boot onto its seat. This is confirmed by Moog's ball joint boot installation procedure. In case the link disappears: Quote: Locate a deep-well socket or a ball joint receiver cup (found in ball joint press kits) that fits over the entire ball joint stud assembly and fits the outside diameter of the boot lip. Using a socket or receiver cup that is too narrow will damage the MOOG boot.
I used a 1-5/8" socket (the 1-7/8 was too big) and pressed the boot down with a vise. I also tried a short piece of 1-1/2" SCH 40 PVC pipe which is a bit tight but also works well enough. You need to make sure that the vise is pressing on the socket and not on the stud.
Place the boot onto the ball joint and install by hand, making sure it is snug. Fit the socket or receiver cup over the ball joint assembly and lightly tap until the boot is even and secure. |
