| Post subject: | My sons Plymouth Signet project - first..seatbelts! |
Hi people, First post here so bear with me, I will get a pic up later. The car is a '67 four door Plymouth Signet with 2.8 slant six engine and 4 speed manual gearbox. It resides with us here in Zürich, Switzerland. It is in top mechanical shape and although there is no serious rust, the body needs some TLC. It has a brand new vehicle test certificate, which in Switzerland as a vintage car, will last 6 years. However, as this is the car he wants to drive after passing his test, I need to get some seatbelts into it. Could anyone help me with what I should be looking for? and more importantly, where to look to buy. So far I have uncovered a Company called Beams in the USA but they have a vast range and I am a little lost. Ideally I would need 3 in the front and 3 in the back. Great looking board and I already found some good info whilst waiting for validation, so thanks for letting me onboard! |

Welcome to the Forum! You will find TONS of useful information and a lot of friendly and helpful folks here! There are several options for seatbelts and I'm sure others with personal experience adding shoulder belts to a vehicle not built with them originally will chime in soon. |

Wilkommen! I am not far from you right now (in Genf for a series of meetings at the UN) -- I head back to North America on Friday. Seat belts: Yes, it's easy. I recommend these up-to-date, reputable-brand seat belts (linked vendor is reliable; I've been buying there for a decade; their eBay store is here). More info on belt selection and mounting is at the maker's website. These belts are ECE typgeprüft (authorised for road use throughout Europe + in Switzerland). Maybe you want to update the headlamps, too -- use Valeo ref. 082438. As for the rest of the car: Tune-up parts and technique suggestions in this thread. Carburetor operation and repair manuals and links to training movies and carb repair/modification threads are posted here for free download. Get the books described in this thread. And please show us pictures of your Swiss-built Valiant!

Wow, thanks for the great response. I will be looking into the belts this weekend, along with the headlights. Definately let me know if you are ever Zürich way with your UN travels. On another knowledge searching note... I have the feeling the clutch is on the way out, are they easy to find? THE biggest problem we (my son and I) are finding here in Switzerland is access to parts and information so I hope you guys don't mind me tapping you I have a couple of old English vintage cars (in the shape of an MGA, an MGB and an Austin Mini still in its original rally spec from the 70's) so the work is not a problem, in fact I am definately an 'older' car person. |

Glad to help. Quote: Definately let me know if you are ever Zürich way with your UN travels.
I shall! Last time I was in Zürich was in...I think it was 2005.Quote: I have the feeling the clutch is on the way out, are they easy to find?
Yes, very easy.Quote: THE biggest problem we (my son and I) are finding here in Switzerland is access to parts and information so I hope you guys don't mind me tapping you
You will always get good advice by posting your questions here. The main difficulty we have in finding parts in North America is that it is hard to get parts in good quality. There is a lot of poor-quality junk on the market these days. Take note of Old Car Parts Northwest and see here, too. Quote: I have a couple of old English vintage cars
Very good -- do get those three books I linked; they will bring up your knowledge of the design & repair philosophy and technique of old US cars.Yours is an interesting car because in North America the configuration (2.8-litre/170 CID slant-6 with 4-speed transmission) was not available. Also yours, if it is an original Swiss-market car, was built to much higher standards of construction and workmanship than the North American cars. Chrysler had an assembly plant elsewhere in Europe, but the quality from that plant and from the North American plants was not adequate to compete successfully and attract buyers in the exacting Swiss market. Therefore the Swiss cars were built by AMAG. See here and here. Tune-up parts and technique suggestions in this thread. Carburetor operation and repair manuals and links to training movies and carb repair/modification threads are posted here for free download. You will probably want to do the HEI upgrade or at least something similar; breaker points are a pain. |
