This might sound crazy but I got a good solid 85 GMC 3/4 ton truck and a perfect super six. The truck has 411 gears and a T400 trans. Would this be hard to do, looks to be more than enough room for it to fit. I also have a good 904 that came with the engine. I have access to the shop at the sawmill where I work to fab up mounts . What do ya'll think? It would get the GM purist flustered.

Did GM run their inline six in that body of truck (I'm sure they didn't by '85, but they used that same body for forever)? If so, it might not be that hard to shoehorn in. I'm going to guess the 904 might be the quick/easy trans solution, but look into the 200R? adapter in the "transmission and rear end" section on the board here also. While I'm not normally a fan of crossbreeding engines/vehicles, I do like the Mopar in a chevy, as revenge for all the 350s that get put in Mopars!

I know that some fleet trucks did, and the sheet metal shop I worked fro had a couple of Chevy vehicles that way (one was a late 70's crew cab manual 3 spd with 250...talk about a clutch burning dog), we also had a couple of full size vans that were 250/THM250 equipped (burned up the transmissions hauling cut up oil furnaces to the scrap yard...)

Would be a fun conversion.

That truck is one of the least expensive vehicles to work with. I'd get a GM Goodwrench 350 from Jegs. I think its $1,500 shipped to your door, with 2 year warranty. If not that, try a 4BT, its not Mopar, but its a Cummins as Dodge uses.

Was wanting to use what I got here. Don't want to spend anymore than I have to. I turn 3 grand at 65 with the engine thats in it now. The engine needs to go. I got a 700r4 that I could use but I haven't heard any talk on putting on of those behind a slant. Will there be much of a weight difference between a slant and a GM 350? Wandering how it will drive. I don't have power steering .[/u]

Lou just did a group buy for adapter plates for a 200R4...all "late" Chevy 6 and small block 8 cylinders have the same bolt pattern, so with the "plate" you could bolt up literally: THM250/350/small block 400, 200R4, 700R4, powerglide....

The slant will weigh a bit less than the chevy 350 (the chevy can go on a diet easily with the aftermarket aluminum parts).

i bought an 85 new back in the day. it was the first year for the 4.3 v-6, which had a quadrajet on it. my brother-in-law had an 84 with the inline in it, and the bodystyle did not change until 86, so i am certain that the inline will fit. incidentally, the 4.3 was peppy, but did not have good longevity or torque. after the second rebuild, i got rid of it. by the way, the frames on the 85 love to break where the shock absorber mounts on the front. i've never seen one that didn't require repair.

i love your idea, and understand your desire to use what you have on hand, but i think it would be even better if you had a 300 ford to put in it. that would REALLY drive 'em nuts!

it's hard to beat a 225 in an a-body for dependable, smooth power.

I have 3:07 gears in my '78 GMC pickup. If you aren't doing heavy hauling that might be an option.
