Post subject:  serviceing a manual steering box?

I got the k-frame out welding it up and pulled the manual steering box. I don't plan to change the box or open it up but there was so much gunk and crud all over the frame in that area I was was woundering if there could have been a leak from the steering box. I found the top seal to be weeping fluid. Can I pull the top lid scrape the seal off apply some rtv reinstall the cover. If so what fliud to put back in and how full? Is the other bolt on the top a fill bolt? Again I don't plan on a rebuild of the box it was working fine. I am just cleaning things up.

Check out FABO. I was doing research on this a while back and there is a guy that posted some dealer part numbers for seals and what not. I forgot the type of grease but it's more like brake grease than 90w oil or anything like that. There's also a worm gear and preload adjustment you can do in your FSM to tighten the box up some. Dan has also explained the procedure on here a few times. You'll have to research on FABO because it took me a while to find the stuff in the first place.

Here's the post.

That adjustment really helps eliminate the highway wander you get if your car has a jillion miles on it like mine.
