Post subject:  Kelsey-Hayes brakes

I found a k-member for sale locally, listed as having K-H 4 piston disc brakes. I've seen them mentioned several times, but don't know anything about them. Are they good brakes? Are pads available? What years did Mopar use them on A-body cars?

Thanks for schooling me - again!

KH was used from 65 until 72. There isn't anything wrong with the design of them. I believe pad selection is decent due to early mustangs also using the same KH parts. Rotors might be harder to find. Make sure to flush the calipers out with good (dot3) brake fluid.

Rotors are reasonable, but rebuilt calipers are pricey.

Caliper parts (like pad retainer clips and rebuild kits) and pads are the same as the early Mustang. There's also a thread over on FABO on modifying and using Mustang rotors with the built-in hubs to get the 4.5" bolt pattern.

I've got EBC Red brake pads and slotted rotors on my Swinger and I'm quite pleased. I also prefer the narrower track of the KH as opposed to the later model disks. I'll probably use the Mustang rotor conversion on my other Dart when I convert the 10" drums to KH disk.
