| Post subject: | Gonna be driving from Long Beach to Boulder this weekend |
When we moved out to Colorado in Feb, I left my '64 Valiant under a cover in the back of our property in Long Beach. I figured I would have it shipped after I got a job. Well, no job came and we got busy and so now I've got to get it out here before the passes get too snowy. I'm flying out to LAX tonight, going to awaken it from its slumber, change the oil and hit the road before traffic in LA tomorrow. Say "Hi" if you see me on the freeway in a bright red '64 Valiant Sedan. I'm not really worried about not making it, it's always been a reliable car, but I am not looking forward to the drafts, leaks and noise (it's an unrestored 175,000 mile original with some issues). Also hoping I don't get dumped on I-70, I don't have tire chains. |

Thanks - decided to go the long way through Albuquerque. So far so good. Gas/temp gauges died, and had to rebuild the carb in a parking lot and have to add a quart every 300 miles but not bad for a 49 year old car. |

Love the roadtrips in these old cars. Cherish the ride in "real life" before the dark times of everycar AC, NVH sound insulation, cell phones, and all that junk... I drove my 64 Valiant up to Hagerstown, MD today and will go back tomorrow. Lou |

How you say with modern additions filling pockets, and lining floors? Easy, the car makes so much noise with ragtop up from wind, engine, rear end and exhaust while under way, I could not hear the phone if it had a fire alarm bell attached, AM only radio reception is spotty these days and 2.5 watts of eardrum pounding sound waves emitted from center dash barely can be heard over the din at mid 2000’s rpm when in range of a station. The waves, thumbs up, and “nice car†audible from pedestrians when top is down is nice as well, something one would have never heard or seen in 1970 driving one of these cars. The older crowd here knows of which I speak, 99% of A Chrysler bodies in the day were not on top of any kool-kar list, contrary to today’s casual observer who now embraces and better appreciates these well designed, and engineered machines… [url=http://www.hemmings.com/mus/stories/2009/12/01/hmn_feature5.html] Mannix’s 68 Dart[/url] would be included in that one percent. So most dry days I fire up the yellow [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Peabody] WABAC Machine[/url] to carry out daily driver transportation needs as if it was the early seventies once again… Often I have the radio on when in range of a local AM station waiting on an update to Nixon’s resignation… LOL |

Yeah it was a good trip. A little over 1300 miles, average a bit over 17 mpg. 8 quarts of oil, and I think I burned a valve somewhere in NM. Lots of thumbs up and approving comments. I know what you mean - this is a bare-bones 64 sedan, not what anyone older than 50 would consider a cool car. But everyone loves it now. |

These are the experiences that enrich your life. Take the long way, overcome some obstacles, have some adventures. Glad you had a good trip and made it OK. |
