My fuel gauge seems to do what it wants, as in, taking "forever" to go to where it needs to be. Then sometimes will go to 3/4's, where it should be, then when I restart the car, may only go to half a tank.
It has a brand new sender/float. Also a brand new fuel line" steel" front to back. I know that don't natter.
Is it just the age of my fuel gauge itself since it is a 71?

Does your engine temperature gauge also misbehave?

Well, it sounds more like a sender issue than anything else, but if you're quite sure that's not it, then the gauge unit itself and the wiring (including the circuit board on the back of the instrument cluster) are the next suspects.

Tony, Do you still have the short jumper from the fuel sender to the fuel line? If so, did you clean the areas where it clips on and check the tension of the clips. That might give you that erratic gauge action.

No?? I see the new metal fuel line that was put on before me, then connected to a rubber hose, then to the fuel sender. But no jumper wire? i think you might be onto something,

I do know the stock tank was replaced by with a 69 Dart tank, " mine is a 71 valiant"....which may differ slightly. But there is no wire?

Here is the part you need.

http://compare.ebay.com/like/4003079397 ... s&var=sbar

http://www.classicindustries.com/mopar/parts/mf290.html

You diagnosed the problem being a ground issue. I just happened to remember an approximate name of the part and googled "mopar gas tank sending unit ground ".

Several hits, If ya don't like egag or Classic Industries I'm sure other parts distributors have 'em.

Here's hoping this helps you out.

Hose clamps and wire, huh?? Oh well, I've done it myself and every time I do the old phrase "Beauty is as beauty does! comes to mind. I thought you wanted pretty, too. But, then again, who looks up between your gas tank and rear axle anyway??

Thanks for the thread Tony I have had the same issue, and thanks gang for the tips, I'll have to take a peek up in there, maybe the wire clamp trick will do for now.
