Post subject:  Speedometer broken

Hey guys,

I've had a bad wobble with my speedometer needle for a few years, figured the cable needed some new lube. Well I was driving on the highway when things went haywire, my needle started bouncing around and then finally laid down. After some research, the cable seemed to be the most likely culprit. I pulled it out, replaced the cable and re installed. Nothing. I'm not sure exactly where to approach from next. Help?

Thanks,
Aspen76

Speedo head's dead. Shaft's broken. Should've sent it in for rebuild before it got worn enough for the stirrup to grab the cup hard enough to break the shaft. Find another and send it in for rebuild; see here.

I called the place in your link, quoted me at $300. I called a local speedometer shop that thinks $100-150. Also, didn't think to check this before but noticed my odometer isn't working either. Everything else in the cluster is working.

Finding a replacement to use while the other is getting fixed will be a treat, any other cars with interchangeable instrument cluster?

Thanks for the help as always,

$300 is a reasonable quote to fix a broken speedometer. Probably (much) less to rebuild a non-broken speedometer.

There's a 76-77 Volare in the Junction City Pick-A-Part that still had it's Dash Cluster...since those Dash's are not 'desired' it might still be there...
I only know because I scored the short slot governor dizzy and a nice original core Holley 1945 off the thing...

You guys are the best, as always.

I suppose I'll just pull out the cluster and send it somewhere and bite the bullet, just had to come around the holidays didn't it?

Oh, Well. Thanks a lot guys,

If married:"Oh look honey Santa put a new/reconditioned speedo in my stocking this year! How did he know?"

If not married:"Ok, I think I can hunker down and not go out or slim down my beer budget for 2 more months...I wonder if the girlfriend likes me or my wallet...Hmmm...THis might be a good test..."

Post subject:  Speedo fix F body

Try a complete dash from a M body: fifth ave, diplomat, or gran fury. All your senders should be compatable. May have to "ring out" a few wires due to color changes. You will end up with a much better/newer dash pad and a speedo that works.
