Post subject: | crankshaft differences? |
i seem to have forgotten what i knew about the differences in the cranks. my brother in law found a used slant for his knocking 65 dart, and i told him there were some differences in the cranks that he should watch out for, but can't remember what it was about the rear registers. don't know the year of the motor he found either. any input will be appreciated. |

For auto trans The only thing you really need to be concerned about is the hole/flange on the rear of the crank. 1967 and older engine is a direct bolt up to a 1965 transmission. 1968 and newer engine will bolt up to a 1965 trans, by using the 1968 up flexplate and an adapter bushing in the end of the crankshaft. The bushing is available from myself, Doc, or tfpatty. For stick Make sure the hole for the pilot bushing is "reamed", not just drilled, regardless of the year. If not reamed it must be reamed or a special reduced OD bushing used. NAPA used to have them, but I think they have been discontinued. On the 1968 or later engines, a pilot bearing from a late model V-8 or V-6 can be used, instead of the bushing (national bearing # FC69907), I think that is the correct part. The flywheel must match the year range of the engine, ie: 67 down or 68 up. The center hole are different sizes. It is possible to have a machine shop enlarge the hole in the early flywheel to fit the late crank. It would also be possible to have an adapter "ring" made to adapt the late flywheel to the early crank. |

thanks for refreshing my memory. i passed your info along to my brother in law, he was happy to learn this. he will be looking for a flex plate and a converter to match the 70 engine. |

He will have to keep the 65 Dart's converter with the 65 trans. The trans input shaft diameter and spline count changed in 68. DD |

Like Doc said. He will need the 70 flexplate and the 65 converter. He will also need the "adapter" bushing referred to in my first post.

i take it that a 70 converter won't work in his 65 transmission? |
