Post subject:  Engine bogs down after new wires/dist. cap/rotor & oil c

I changed the plugs in my truck when I was first getting it running so today I decided to go ahead and change the air filter, oil, distributor cap, and rotor as well as all 3 belts. On light throttle it seems to have better pick up but on 1/2 to full throttle it seems to bog down. Does anyone have any ideas what to look for so I can get it running better again? I know the fuel filter should be changed and will get that shortly. Thanks for your help

If the problem never existed before, go back and look at the things that would have caused this . Not oil change,or air filter, the dist cap and rotor. Vheck your vacuum and mechanical advance as well.

how do you check the mechanical advance? I have a repair manual and will try to find it in there but I know that book leaves a bunch of stuff out. Thank you.

Does his distributor have mechanical advance?

Cap and rotor can come into play here. Where did you get them, and if you saved the boxes, what are they? Manufacturer and part number.

What spark plugs did you install, what were they gapped at, and did you verify your wires were in good shape?

Has this truck been running? What have you done with the vacuum lines, and emission controls on it? An '86 won't run right if everything isn't working and in it's place. They can be modified to work with other parts if the emission laws allow it at your location. There are a great many mods that can be made if it's allowed, otherwise, you will need to rebuild the system as it was originally designed. It will work, and fairly well once it is correct.
