Has anybody used the mid 80s 3.8l fi that is in the tech articles? I was thinking about using it with a turbo.

I was woundering the same thing. I have read the artical but not seen any real info on the driveability or reliability. I know every one goes with mega squirt for more control but really how well would this work? Or not? The search function turns up very little in the way of the gm 3.8L efi.

I built a EFI /6 years ago using the GM-Buick 3.8L sequential system ('86 to '88 VIN3) All in all it had great driveability- turn key starts- ran fine under all conditions. The distributorless ignition system was neat. I got 20-21 mpg with a 3.55 gear- 904 trans in my '75 Dart.. & a big foot. The only problem I had was the hydraulic cam setup I used didn't oil properly, causing lifter collapse that the knock sensor would pickup & retard timing.

The big reliability concern was the GM "hot film" MAF sensor- rather failure-prone, so I kept a spare in the trunk-but never needed it.
Since I got parts from a junked car, the system was cheap to build, but took lots of fabricating. Diagnosis with a scantool (if you have one) is easy, & parts are available anywhere. On the downside you can't change fuel or spark maps without someone burning a custom chip.
