| Post subject: | Power steering modding question |
Simple question, would it increase the steering effort if you changed the pulley diameter (bigger) on the steering pump to slow it down some, also freeing up some engine drag. I like the turns lock to lock of the power steering but the light touch is too soft, this idea just popped into my head so what do you experts think? |

This is just a guess, but I would say all you will accomplish is poor low speed steering. There used to be an upgrade kit for the steering box that made it like the high effort police box. |

Slantzilla, after I posted I started thinking about it and it occured to me the box changes speed with the engine already and it may not make much of a difference, maybe as a mileage savings on highway driving, but yes harder slow steering. Hmm, I'll have to find the post on the police box you mentioned. |

Here is an interesting article on increasing the effort by removing a simple shim. Note that the slant six box's are a higher effort than the V8 box already, is a slant six that much lighter than the small V8? http://www.moparaction.com/tech/beep/PU ... e-v1.4.pdf |

That trick works very well with a Saginaw pump if you have one. The Thompson/TRW/Federal pumps can be modified similarly, at least some of them. I have one with an adjustable pressure relief valve AND an adjustable flow valve, which is kind of cool. When I rebuilt my box I stacked two reaction shims/springs on each side instead of one. The car isn't running so I can't report back on the feel yet. |
