| Post subject: | 67 Barracuda alt swap questions |
I read that my Barracuda came with and has a 60 amp alternator.I have a brand new rebuilt 78 amp( 1973 I was told) alternator.Should I change the alt wire to larger to the bulk head connector for safty before swapping? Or should I take the new larger wire all the way to the amp guage? Will I even need a larger wire? can I add an inline fuse?(this seems hokey to me) Should I just buy a 67 style alt? This rebuilt unit was on my wifes 63 Valiant when I wrecked it, and in the wreck it broke an ear off, so they replaced it for free( auto parts store) And all that seemed to be updated on the 63 was a larger wire ran for the alt to the bulk head connector. I am asking all theser questions because it might have worked fine like that on another car, but I want it done right when I do it.LOL |

The '67 would have been a 'buzz box' alternator with the one field wire, using the 1973 you'd need to either ground the second field prong or just wire the circuit with a 1970+ elec. VR for best results. I would upgrade the wiring to and from the ammeter for what you are about to do, or wire in a shunt to take the pressure off the gauge and prevent the car coming to a halt if the amm is toast. -D.Idiot |

I don't know what a shunt is. The alt already had 1 prong grounded , as that's the way the old alt was on the 63. What gauge wire would you recomand? Can I just run a continous wire all the way from the alt to the Ted side of the gauge ? On a side note , the voltage reg is a electronic copy of the old points style |
