Post subject:  Disc conversion

Hello all, I'm doing a disc conversion on my 71 and I found a 74 donor in great shape. Got the uca's spindles and calipers. I can also get the rotors for $15 each. Is it worthwhile or should I just get new ones? What should I look for on the used rotors that would make it worthwhile? Thanks!

Get new ones. The old ones may be warped, and you'll never know that until you step on the brakes that first time.

After all that work you might as well have new rotors and pads!

Post subject:  I would also get...

The LCA's if your car was 9" drum brake equipped, or if the car had a sway bar...

Also check the 74 torsion bars...you might get lucky if a V-8 car and snag a set of 892/893 bars which would be an upgrade from that standard V-8 bar and 2 steps up from the standard pre-73 slant six bars...

So do I need the LCA's or is it just nice to have them? I'm doing a front end rebuild so I will get all me ball joints... Thanks again! PS my car does have 9" drums now.

Post subject:  Steering stops

The LCA steering stops are shaped differently between the 1967-1972 LCA and balljoint connection and the 1973-1976...If you keep your LCA, you will test fit the assembly then breakout the grinder and go to town on the stops on your LCA...

Good to know - I've done the swap 3 times and I did not know about this. Do you get less or more turn with the early LCAs? Is the 63-66 LCA different?

Less thus the need to reshape the stops...

That make so much sense. But I'm OK with that because it keeps my tires from rubbing on the swaybar. But now that you mentioned it I am going to do some checking.

I got the spindles, UCA's, calipers. Now I'm looking at doing a front end rebuild. Looking at the kits, I know that I need the larger 73+ ball joints, but are there any other differences I should be aware of (bushings, etc.) that could present an issue for installing on my 71?

I tend to "adjust" the steering stop (travel) on all LCAs I deal with...
That extra steering travel comes in handy for "tight spots, u-turns and over-steer "correction".
