Post subject:  Camshaft too far in engine.

Here's another assembly question. Y'all are getting my Belvedere closer and closer to being back on the road!

I had a machine shop install the new cam bearings and he went ahead and installed a new "cap" at the opposite side of the engine from where the camshaft is inserted. I slid the camshaft in and gave it a little tap to line it up with the bearings but the camshaft is a little further back than it should be. I can tell this by the journals hanging out more from the back side of the bearings than the front and the lobes are a little behind the lifters. However, the front of the cam is nearly flush with the block.

Is there something that was suppose to go between the back of the camshaft and the cap or will the camshaft move into the proper position after the timing pieces are put back on?

Yes, the cam sprocket sets the fore-aft cam location.
