Checked in the FSM but don't see anything about getting the oil pan off while the engine is still in the car. This came over from Ca last year and someone along the line must have thought that the pan was a great place to jack the car up from. They have pushed it up so far that the dipstick didn't seat all the way down. OK, so can I get the pan out without removing the engine? I guess maybe the centre link has to come out? Any thing else please? I'm sure that someone else has tried this before. All replies gratefully received. Thanks Regards Gary |

It's easier to pull the engine unless you don't have the equipment to do so. |

I would thread tap and then use a slide hammer, to pull a damaged dipstick tube out... with-out oil pan removal. DD |

It sounds like the bottom of the pan is caved in. I've tried doing the pan in-car on my '73, & by the time I had the eng up high enough (& the trans dropped low enough), it would have been easier to pull the engine. Esp. when you factor trying to get the pan gasket in place & sealed when underneath the car-with oil dripping non-stop. So when it was time for engine work on my'63, out came the engine. Engine hoist & stand from Harbor freight or some-such is fairly cheap. Fitting the pan with the engine out & upside down is sheer joy in comparison. It is also a good time to do the rear oil seal & front trans seal. I don't know if you can un-dent your pan- just remember that the pan for the old "narrow body" cars is different from the '67 up "wide body". |

I wouldn't think so- the oil pan metal is fairly thick. I'm not sure if a slide-hammer dent puller would be enough. (I might try it & MIG the screw holes closed) Depending on how big the dent is, you'll likely have to beat it out from the inside- maybe with a torch heating things up. |

Thanks everyone for chiming in. Looks like it's out through the top. All advice appreciated - and good point about redoing the rear seal and the tranny front seal. Regards Gary |
