Post subject:  Carter 1bbl issues!

Hey guys,

since i've blown up my daily driver, i've been having to lug around in the old fargo for the past few weeks. Got increasingly poor MPG and now some misfiring issues. Keep in mind i'm driving in -25 to -35 consistently.

I'm a FI guy, never tinkered with a carb in my life. Have megasquirted cars, swapped engines, turbocharged various things, but carbs are new to me.

specs 1967 /6, carter 1bbl, missing vent clip on pump rod, but hasn't made an issue yet. Manual choke.

checked timing chain stretch, very minimal, points are set right, and timing was 2ºbtdc.

This carb looks a little different than all the pictures i've seen online. It has a screw on both the drivers side and passenger side where the linkage/choke levers are instead of the fast idle/curb idle screws. Can anyone tell me which is which?

Symptoms:

Poor MPG, now it won't accelerate past 40mph, some backfiring, almost feels like i'm stuck in the idle circuit. out of gear, the engine revs up just fine all the way to redline with no issues.

Attempts at fixing so far:

Checked to see that i'm getting fuel, check. The accelerator pump linkage was in the outer hole, so i put it back to center, reset the idle mixture screw to about 1.5 turns, and backed off both the screws on the rear of the carb until they weren't touching anything, idle was around 650, reset timing, no change.

i notice a tiny bit of leakage when i pump the gas a few times around the rear throttle shaft bushing, but it's fairly minor, couple of drops.

Seems to run fairly rich at idle.

Has no problems starting in the cold.

Any tips?

ordered a new cap, rotor, condensor, etc, but everything in there is in alright condition.
haven't checked the valve lash, but it's pulling good stable vacuum.
I did get a few tanks of ethanol blend i do believe, 10%, and that's near where the troubles started.

Have ordered a rebuild kit, can't find a tag number, so just picked two.

any sources for throttle shaft?

A little sacrilegious, but i'm trying to keep this one on the cheap, since i'm planning on swapping the body onto a shortened 1st gen cummins chassis in the summer.

Welcome to slantsix.org!

Your float may need to be replaced.

How much vacuum are you seeing? Assuming a basically stock engine, idle should be 19" HG or better. With mods, could be anywhere.
Set the valve lash at your earliest opportunity.

A cummins project sounds fun! :D

Check out the FAQ for this section. It includes carburetor information!

about 16" cold, when it warms up around 20"

are these floats rubber or brass?

i've downloaded the carter manuals from the site, but still can't figure out what each of these two screws does.

20" Warmed up is good.

Somebody else needs to step up on the adjuster screws. More a four barrel guy myself.
