1920 holley carb

Rebuilt carb, fixed exhaust leak, and still the car surges and feels like it wants to die at stop signs and other stops with foot on break and gear in drive. Very fast idle on P and N with no surging or stalling.

The problem gets worse as the car heats up to operating temp.

Could this just be a timing, carb adjustment issue?

I think I need to re adjust the distributers teeth. Its all the way to one side and I cannot adjust any further though I feel I should. This was not an issue a few months ago.

Timing chain?? Can the timing chain jump and get out of whack?

Sounds like a vacuum leak, but it could just as easily be a bad (and unrebuildable) carburetor.

I will need to check for vacuume leaks. I don't think I have any though.

I do not have a different carb to test with but may know someone who does and can check with them sometime soon.

I do not have power brakes. Drums all the way around.

sounds very much like a power break booster leak to me. I had the same problem, it took me nearly two years, I went to 4 different mechanics and 5 carbs. Finally I found the leak on my own. I fixed it for free, (junk yard) no problems yet.

May be its not a booster leak, but I would search some more before swapping carbs around. I tried swapping carbs around for a very long time. At first they would work great, and a few days later I would have the same exact problem. You could only imagine how much money and time that cost me.

I now work on my own truck, I don't trust mechanics anymore. With the help of this forum, my truck now runs great.

I found a video on youtube were a guy find leaks by blowing cigarette smoke threw a hose attached to his intake (engine turned off), were ever smoke comes out of, thats were your leak is.
