First, my gas gauge stopped working. I grounded the wire that hooks to the sending unit and the gas gauge pegged at full, so it appears there is sufficient signal running to the unit. BUT, I installed a new sending unit and it only goes to half-full, when the tank is full. Question: what is the likelihood that I got a bad unit (new)? Do the floats stick easily when installing? It appears that the arm was freely movable when I installed in the tank. Does anyone have more luck with a particular brand? I got mine from Rock Auto, can't recall the brand, but it wasn't the most expensive one, I went for the brass float, rather than plastic, other than that I'm not sure of the quality of the resistor.

BTW, the oil leak issues that I had have been reduced dramatically, but there is still a slow leak from the head gasket, I don't think they used any silicone around the oil galley areas when installing the head gasket....ugh. I read on this forum that someone had tried some permatex high temp silicone around the head/block seam and it worked ok. This is a low-pressure leak, right? Don't want to pull the head for this, but I will if need be. Gosh, I hate to ask, but is there any "snake oil" that seals such a slow leak that one can use and then flush out and put new oil in straight away? I'd be loathe to use something like that, but pulling the head at this point makes me cringe....

Another question. My timing appears to be 20 degrees advanced, but that's the only place where it runs/idles smoothly. Do the dampeners' outer ring shift position to give a false timing reading? When I hook the timing light up and move to 5 degrees BTDC, it runs awful. Move back to 20 degrees advanced and it runs great. Any thoughts on my timing issue?

When sender is installed the float should have the upper limit (full) adjusted by bending the float arm, so the float comes very close to the top of the tank. Try looking at the old sender to get a rough idea for placement.

I just did a brain dead, pull from box and install without thinking too much...

I'll pull it and check the float height.
