Hey guys, My Carter BBD has a small (can't find where it's coming from) leak under the fuel inlet. The gas isn't coming from the inlet itself as it's only wet below the inlet but not the space in between. I've been setting money aside to throw this crappy BBD away and go to EFI but it's got to hold for now. I can't take the carb off to properly examine it as my fiance's car broke down and I don't have the time to take it off after work and still be able to drive it in the morning. As one might expect, emptying my carb bowl after each run is killing my fuel economy, not to mention dangerous having fuel leak onto my intake so near to my exhaust manifold. All this being said, I'm looking for a quick fix that will hold me over for two months to see me through my finance's car repairs and to put away the rest for the MPFI megasquirt swap. I've got an idea that I'm going to throw out there, to most certainly be shot down. I was thinking I could just clean the wet area and coat it with this. As the afflicted area is not on the idle mixture screws or anything that needs to be adjusted, I figured it can't hurt. My thought is that at best it fills the crack or whatever is causing the leak. At worst it doesn't work and creates a mess. Bring on the objections ![]() Aspen76 |

I've used JB on before. Not on the outside. On the threads. Teflon tape might work on the threads too. Move the inlet and it will change float height. Permatex makes a goop I call Black Berry juice. It comes with a brush. It may not work. Carry a fire extinguisher. |

If it is leaking through the casting and you just need a tempory fix, try rubbing a cake of soap on it |
If it is leaking through the casting and you just need a tempory fix, try rubbing a cake of soap on it
Yup, years ago, I patched small leaks in gas tank with “Lava†soap. Don’t ask why it works, I have no explanation why a mixture of grease, lye, and pumas will stick stay and resist fuel, but it does. |

Hey guys, Ok, so the permatex is out of the question. Just to clarify the location of the leak, it's coming from the underside of the bowl somewhere in front of the idle mixture screws, can't find it exactly but it has to be very tiny. Just found out that my fiance's car is doomed (not worth the money to fix it) so now I'm unable to take it off and tinker for awhile. Never heard of the soap thing before but more than worth a shot. Thank you guys, Aspen76 |

Some Carter BBDs have main well plugs. They can leak. The carb with the plugs was a slant 6 Carb 8127S. Last time I redid a BBD I coated the jet well plugs with the Permatex black berry juice, then the gasket. IIRC the gasket is solid so the goop may have been over kill. |

Thanks for the replies guys. I ran through the pictures I took during my rebuild and it doesn't look like I've got those plugs. My BBD is from a 318. I bought some lava soap and have scrubbed around the afflicted zone. I won't be sure if it worked until after I drive it tomorrow. Fingers crossed ![]() Thank you, Aspen76 |
