Post subject:  1966 Plymouth valiant 225 running issues.

Hello all I'm new here and new to owning a slant six.
I recently got a 1966 Plymouth valiant 200 wagon 3 speed auto with the leaning tower of power 255.

My issue is that it does not want to keep running. I had it running for a little while enough to move under its own power barley, if i give it some gas it would cut right out. now it does not want to fire up at all. i get some sputters from it but nothing.
ive adjusted the carb to most lean just to see what it would do it does the same it seems to want to run if i turn the screw full to rich if i pour gas in the carb it runs until it runs out of fuel. the carburetor is working as it should i can watch it do its thing I am stumped. I can rebuild it but whats the point if its working properly? could it be as simple as the choke not doing its thing?

Any help is greatly appreciated thank you all.

So far this is what i have done
cleaned the carb
replaced spark plugs
distributor cap and rotor
wires
points and condenser
oil
vacuum lines
fuel filter

Welcome! :D

You may find the FAQ in this section helpful. There is a tremendous amount of infomation there!

You will want to look at the Carburetor section.

What did you set the float level to? Fresh fuel filter? Fuel pump, plugged line from the tank, and floaties in the tank can contribute.

Had this car been parked, and unused for a long time?

I have not checked the float level, its been sitting for about a year, i don't think the lines are clogged they are all new so is the tank its less then 3 years old. once the blizzard is over I will be taking a bottle of fuel and just rigging it up to rule out the fuel line or carburetor.

I will check out the carb section Sorry about the post

No need to be sorry. Hope I didn't come off like that.

Double check the float level, that your getting adequate flow, that there is no foreign material plugging something up, then offer an unplucked chicken up to the hydrocarbon gods.

The last bit probably won't help, but you might feel better.

There are a bunch of guys here that play with the OEM carbs, so can make better determination of what might be wrong.

Sitting for a year is the first clue. You could very well have something plugged up.

Now for something completely different...
Pull-off the valve cover and confirm that you have a solid lifter engine (adjustable rocker arms)
If it is.. check / re-adjust the valve lash... then go back to "trouble-shooting".

Try removing the fuel line at the carb and see if you are getting a sufficiant amount of fuel to the carb.

Thecollector,

I did not notice that you are from LA, not many Maineacs on this board… welcome aboard; Slanted Opinion Mac resides in Portland area, and probably also digging out as well.

Where the car sat unused for a year, it is a good chance it has some white crud from our 10% ethanol polluted fuel plugging idle circuit.

thank you all for the comments, the main thing I am confused about is that it did run, I took it for a short drive. there was no fuel in the system when i got it i put 2 gallons in pumped the hell out of it got the fuel lines all filled and it ran. I put some fuel system cleaner through as well just due to the 10% mix. not sure if that helped or hurt it.

It is not the oem carburetor. its a Holley single barrel. (I do have the oem one)

when it ran i did not hear any ticking or noise that would tell me the valve lash is off.

Once the blizzard is over i will be back at it again trying to figure it out i will be running it off a bottle of gas other then the fuel line to see if its the carb or indeed the fuel lines.

And yesha I'm a Mainer! and a car guy. if you are ever around the LA area this summer roys all steak has one heck of a cruse night.

I worry about the lash being too tight, not loose.
Tight lash can bleed-off an lot of cold cranking cylinder pressure, making the engine hard to start, even if you have fuel & spark.

I wouldn't think that would be the issue, I will keep it in mind. the last owner was not very car savvy and i doubt he messed with the internals, I pulled the spark plugs and they where very bad. I almost want to say its a choke issue. its just very random on when it sputters no matter what combination i do it just does it when it wants to.

I plan on removing the fuel line and hooking up a bottle of fuel to see if the carb is the problem or the fuel lines, the last owner said he might or might not have replaced the lines, i have documents on the fuel tank being replaced in 1994.

I have to say I have a 300 inline six in my truck. if the slant six is anything close to my truck once i get it right ill be golden! [/img]

Alright everyone, It is the carburetor which is a good/bad thing.

I removed it and pumped the throttle a bit and the fuel just dribbled down the side of the throttle body I cleaned it out some very carefully with a pick and it sprayed out like it should then just went back to running down the side. SO! I ordered a rebuild kit for it and will be going to do my first carburetor rebuild if all can believe that!

Don't let my love of the classics fool you! haha i'm a young gun most kids my age are dealing with there vtec Honda and turbos when I keep to the old motto there is no replacement for displacement!.

I bought this valiant thinking of putting a 426 Hemi in it but I think I am going to keep the slant six might possibly make it a hyper pack, Aussie performance has some very nice aftermarket parts as well as Clifford racing I noticed there is a slant six with a supercharger! i think the slant six can give my buddy's a run for there money at oxford plains if not it will make a great street rod.

about 16k for just the engine alone. once it is done i would not doubt it would be a wheel stander haha! I got time I'm thinking it would be cheaper to build one up myself just buying the block heads ect over time. once i got all the bits the wagon should be done as far as body work is concerned.

who knows its just an idea i got. im reading up more and more on the slant six and they where used in the past for drag cars which is cool, Might do a dragster throwback with it, only time will tell really.
