I have been told to remove the star shaped plug use a 1/2in rachet drive... is this the proper tool for this? My Rachet seams to fits so-so.... but my breaker bar wont work that well.... also I have tried to break the plug lose and I haven't had any luck..... can anyone make suggestions? It is on a 67 Barracuda......

If it's an 8 point star shape, then the square drive of a rachet or breaker bar will work, even with an extension. If it's hard to bust loose, spray some penitrating oil on it and let it soak in.

The plug is designed to accept a 1/2 inch square, it is best to have something with a flat tip on it so it bottoms-out solid.

If it is stuck, you can hit it with a 1/2" drive air impact gun to see if that knocks it loose.

I got mine off using a long ratchet and a short extension.

I did find that I wasn't able to do it with the cover off of the rear. I had to bolt it back on to remove the plug.

It WILL come off.

South East.... near the Tri-Cities...

also this is my next plan..... get penatrating oil soak it good..... then try..... then Use a torch to heat it..... then try... I also am a bit worried about messing up the plug and I hope I havnt yet.... also I was thinking there is a good surface arround the plug exposed I think a pipe wrench might work?......

I have one of those special wrenches for it. If you were anywhere near Seattle I thought I could just pop over and pop it out for you.

I have extra covers and plugs so have at that stuck SOB, if you mess it up, let me know and I'll send you a replacement.

PS, if you apply heat you will melt the plastic washer under the plug.

A long time ago, I asked the local parts guy for that wrench, and he said he thought you couldn't get one anymore, so he opened up his tool box and handed me his. He said he had no use for it anymore. It's L-shaped, like a large allen wrench, with the star shaped head.
