| Post subject: | Slow Wipers |
My new to my 1974 Dart has very slow wipers and seems to move at the same speed regardless of switch position. Since the wipers DO move and "park" when I turn off, I assume it's not a linkage bushing thing. So, mopar gurus, am I looking at a bad switch? bade motor or wiring? |

Could be that there is some built-up resistance (corroded connections) in circuit and motor is not seeing full voltage. More likely the pivots, the part that wiper arm mounts on, and under dash linkage attaches to is dry in need of lubrication. Solution would be to check for voltage drop in wiper motor circuit, and remove wiper pivots to inspect for freedom of movement. There are seal kits which include a zircon grease fittings to lube shaft, and seals to keep weather out. |

On my last Dart the wiper arm pivots were so corroded & rusty that I could barely move them by hand. I ended up getting used ones that were in better shape to "rebuild" - added bushings, seals, & grease fittings. |

Start with Wjajr's advice, but typically in the late cars it's the switch that gives out...that being said, if you have a the "flat" motor (i.e. the motor doesn't "stickout"), it's a 3 speed or 'variable speed' wiper motor...sometimes these are slow until they get more 'juice' (i.e rev the motor)... also if someone installed a 2 speed switch on the 3 speed motor it will stick in 'low' mode in the late cars... (Hey dude I just pulled this switch out of a junkyard car, don;'t ask me what kind of wipers they use...) -D.Idiot |

Thanks. I get some time to play tomorrow, so i'll check some of these things out. The switch has 4 positions (I'm guessing Off-Low-Medium-High), so it seems to be a real 3-speed switch. RPM seems to have little or no effect on wiper speed (or lack thereof). And different positions of the switch seem to have no increase/decrease in speed. |
