Post subject:  crank problems

I'm building my first slant6 and putting it together with parts from all over and journel number three with the bearing with edges is about a 1/4 of an inch smaller than the journel in the crank now the block is a 1967 225 block and the crank is supposed to be forged so i'm pretty sure this is wrong and i need to be seconded thax john h

Post subject:  Yes...

Forged crank journal on the "thrust bearing" (with flanges), should fit, if it's about 1/4" short then you have a cast crank bearing and it needs to be changed...if you have a box of bearings and the factory (or warehouse monkeyboy) mixed one up, time to get it replaced by your parts house.

As suggested, it sounds like you might have the wrong bearing(s), a picture or better description of what isn't 'tight' might help. A proper bearing will have a slight interference fit in it's bore, what I call a 'snap fit' that is easily overcome by installing with just your fingers and once installed, it should not be loose.

A snip from a Dana/Clevite Tech sheet;
All bearings are an interference fit in their housing; this relates to something we call crush. Crush results from each half shell bearing being made a few thousandths more than a true half circle. When two bearing shells are placed together their outside diameter is slightly larger than the ID of the housing they fit into. When the housing cap is torqued the bearings are compressed, like a spring, resulting in a radial contact pressure between the bearings and the housing. Another way of looking at it is that the housing is squeezing inward on the bearings and the bearings are pushing back outward against the housing.

Now I'm thinking that you may have a cast crank that you are trying to fit into a forged crank block.

is the journel on a forged crank narrow or wide

Post subject:

Forged crank = wide journal.
Cast crank = narrow journal.

Now it sounds like a cast crank block with a forged steel crank.
How many freeze plugs are in the block?

five down the drivers side

A 67 block should have 3 freeze plugs and a tapered rib behind the water pump, like shown below.
A cast crank block will have 5 freeze plugs and a thin rib, all the way across.

Post subject:  Get a cast crank...

Sounds like you need a cast crank from a 1977-1987 slant six.
