Post subject:  74 Dart Carb Questions

Okay, I'll be the first to admit it, carbs baffle me. below are a couple of images of my carb and a choke setup I've never seen before. This is all on my new to me 74 Dart. Currently, the car stumbles terribly unless you let it warm up thoroughly and has a very rough idle, until you give it some fuel. Below are some pictures I snapped this past weekend, when I pulled the air cleaner and checked the carb basics as outlined in the FAQ. can anyone tell me which carb this is and make suggestions for my next move? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Your carb is the stock Holley 1945 for the 1974+ slant six. Looks like the choke pull off, choke stove, and the choke 'heater' are still intact and correctly installed.

Sadly, if an original carb, the jetting is very lean and I will recommend that if rebuilding this carb that you get a #60 or 61 jet, and set the carb linkages to the 1976 standards listed in the carb kit's instructions, this should keep your mileage, and give back some power on the road.

Does the choke fully engage on start up?
How big is the slot between the choke blade and the carb after you pump it a couple of times.
Check this setting before you start it when it's cold....first start in the morning. The gap should be per the manual. And is the choke pull off working? to open the choke blade after it starts?

To see settings, go to the "carb manual section" under Engine FAQ and down load your manual.

Thanks, DI. Just the kind of info I was hoping for.

Ted, I did check it cold when I took the above pics. Everything seemd to be happening as it should, but I'll check per the manual this weekend, hopefully.

Looks to me like the choke is open a good way. If the engine was cold when the pic was taken, I would start with the cold choke setting.

Hmmmmmmmm. I think it may have been running when I took the pics. CRS is a terrible disease.

The pictures show the car fully warmed up. The choke pull off has pulled the choke plate all the way open.
You need to examine it dead cold after you you pump it twice, and before you turn the key to check the carb settings.
