Tips or tricks for oil changes? Filter will not catch oil tube threads, oil tube will not catch oil pump. Had the filter jump off and lost 3 quarts.

i've had better luck with the house brands than the name brands. i think filter manufacturers have gotten all caught up in the "cheap price" frenzy that pays no mind to quality.

When you pulled your old filter off did the original oil filter gasket remain on the pump flange? (That's the only way I could think of that the filter would not seat and catch the threads on install.)

How tight was the old filter you pulled off? Some bastard might of over tightened it with a band wrench and ruined the threads.

Get a new stand pipe if you have to....

Well the threads on the pipe catch the filter but never the pump housing. The filter jumped off the pump. Anyway to prevent this or reduce the chance of this happening?

Does the stand pipe screw onto the pump snugly? You screw the filter on after the pipe is tight on the pump.

I've been trying to avoid putting the filter on after putting the pipe on the pump because I get some nasty scraping noises after oil changes and when the car sits for a while, then the engine settles into a nice ticking idle.

You just have explained why the pipe will not stay in your pump, it is going the path of least resistance UP INTO THE FILTER.

It stays on... just won't catch the threads on oil pump if I try to install it with the filter on.

You need to install the pipe into the pump. It should not be removed. Then install the filter on the pipe/pump.
