Post subject:  Drum brake swap

Someone put 11" brakes on the 74 dart I bought at some point in the past. 8 1/4" rear. I want to go back to the stock 10" drums on it.

Just so happens a friend with a 68 charger has 10's and wants 11's. His were stock, 8 3/4".

I've read you can swap from 8.25 - 8.75 - 9.25 - 9.75 BBP - but, just to be certain before we start this endeavor, will this work? I know you can cross rears but not sure if crossing body styles will work too.

They should fit, but you will have to look at the drum/shoe width to make sure that your tires have proper clearance.

Sorry... width? You mean diameter of drum vs inside diameter of wheel?

Post subject:  Shoe/Drum width...

Mopar drum brake came in various widths depending on the platform (thus a big B/C body might have 11"x3" drums and shoes vs say the regular Dart at 10"x2.25" or 10"x2.5"/ 9"x 2")

Stock Darts (not Dart Sport) have a tight wheel well so if using wide aspect tires or non-stock rims they might rub. If using stock 15" rims and a standard tire (like 225/60/15), you should be OK.

Sorry to sound dense... How does using a wider shoe/drum affect tire clearance ? The axle flange is in the same place and the drum sits on the flange, right? I thought wider shoes were accommodated by a deeper backspace built into the backing plate.
