Post subject:  Alternator stops charging when hot

Hey guys,
I have a 73 Dodge B300 van with a 3.9 Isuzu turbo diesel motor with a Nippondenso alternator. The problem is when the engine gets up to operating tempreture ( about 10 min or so at idle ) the alternator stops charging. The charging circuit still retains what appears to be the original mopar voltage regulator ( so I think ) but it has a 3 wire connector which plugs into the bottom. I removed the alternator to repair the mount and when I hooked up the connections, one of the wires got hot. I switched the wires around and that solved that problem, but now the alternator quits. My guess is I fried the regulator??? Any imput would be a great help-

Update found some bad connections in the engine bay, but the problem turned out to be a bad stator- never had that happen before, but I appreciate the experience
