Post subject:  I think I found it! 5 speed for SLANT 6 pickups!

I just stumbled across this...

From 1987 to early 90's, Dodge had a 5 speed transmission that wasn't real popular. It was in early Dakotas and in full size pickups, too.

It's an overdrive, and 5 speed. And it comes in 2wd and 4wd versions.

It's called an New Venture 2500, or a New Process A535 - the name change was only that, because NP became New Venture. This transmission appears to SHARE A BELLHOUSING WITH THE NP435 and fits the 318 and V-6. So, the shaft is a standard length input... for a Mopar.

It should bolt right to a standard pickup slant six bellhousing!!!!

I can't find gear ratio information for this trans... Do any of you know where to get that?

Thanks

You will have to confirm which bolt pattern it has, the standard light duty transmission would be the smaller 'car' style bellhousing for the 4 speed and the 10" clutch. The NP435 is the heavy duty option and bellhousing and does not share bolt patterns with the other transmissions at all. If it can be used with the NP-435 bell then it would be a good upgrade, although it looks like it is lighter duty in nature and not a "speedy/sporty" shifter like the NP 822/833 series light duty 4 speeds.

If it uses the same 23 spline as the regular light duty clutches then the early NP435 user will have the change their clutch disk to match as the early/mid-60's used a 10 spline input shaft if I remember right.

Car-Part says they have one in Turner nearby, but at $500...I may just go look for the fun of it...

Ahh, right. I had the big trucks in mind, vs the pickups, which in my mind, I meant "light duty" as being a pickup, not a midrange truck.

So, what I found in the used parts listings is the same bell housing for a 435 and A535. The A535 was also used in the Dakota.

Nobody has one listed in the Northwest, so it's not viable for me to go look in a yard.

Gear ratios off ramcharger central .com 1st 3.79, 2nd 2.29 3rd 1.48 4th 1.00 5th 0.79, might work with a higher rear axle ratio, think the truck bellhousings are drilled for both style transmiisions

Post subject:  Not...

The 70's and 80's NP-435 are not, they are drilled just for the NP435 tranny, the regular 4 speed bell (As seen in D-100's) will take the A-390 3 speed and A-833 bolt patterns but not the NP-435...(Which is why I've almost got my adaptor done for installing the A-833OD behind the NP-435 bellhousing (more clutch...).

Pick-a-Part Turner about 10 minutes south of Salem, has a 1991 Dakota equipped with a NP535...but they want $500 for it if being removed...

I believe sixinthhead used this trans behind a 170 in his '64 Valiant. Has been running for about 8-10 yrs?

IIRC that bell on the Dakota would require lots of cutting in an A body.

if it bolts to a /6 then a r154 toyoto 5 speed would bolt to it and they are a good 5 speed with dood ratios

What I really want here, is to put this in a 4x4, so I needed a trans that can bolt to an 81 bell housing and transfer case.

Airport Truck in Salem (on Turner Road farther in town...), has the 4x4 version in a 1989 Dakota...they are kind of spendy as they not only deal with trucks but late corvettes (the only place in town to get a T-56 if you need one...)

Yep.
Mine was 2wd of course, but it worked great!
It's now somewhere in the depths of Virginia, hopefully being installed in a certain white Toad...

The tranny fits the 833OD bellhousing just fine, and the lower bolts line up, but you have to weld up the top ears on the BH and drill/helicoil new holes.

I don't know it's strength limits - I never broke mine, even with repeated clutch drops on the strip that were hard enough to spin the pumpkin on my SG 7 1/4.
Drove it on the street for years and loved the ratios. Had it in front of 2.76 and 3.55 diffs with short (195/50-15) and tall (225/70-15) tires.

To bad that saddles the truck user with the whimpy 9 1/4" clutch or the not very HD 10" clutch (known to explode when over stressed)...if it shared the NP435 bolt pattern that allows D-150 users and the early trucks with the 11" clutch to bolt right in, but the NP 435 bolt pattern is very different than the 833 bolt pattern (the bottom 2 bolts on the 833 are past the bottom of the inspection plate flange on the bellhousing....

So if he has the late bellhousing and can get it 'reworked' he should be able to get it all to come together.

Interesting.

Nope, not gonna work. i have an 81 W150 with np435 and I finally found an actual picture of it.

Apparently some newer bellhousings have both bolt patterns. But, of course, they're for the LA engines.

Gawd, that sucks.

Soooo.. That means you could use one of the LA-slant 6 adaptor plates, with the late bellhousing and the new transmission...(about $1000 for the process including the transmission...).

Truth be told, if I get my NP bell to A-833 adaptor plate figured out, this would allow another bolt pattern so the Np535 could be bolted to the Np435 bell...
