In the V-8 EI disributer, the reluctor has two locating pin holes. There is also an arrow on the reluctor. Does any one know the purpose/reason for the two different holes? Is one hole used in small block clockwise rotation, and the other used for big block counter clockwise rotation?

That would be correct as I've seen in tearing down some LA and B distributors lately. Also this allows a V-8 guy to change the reluctor phasing if needed as the same situation happens on the Lean-Burn distributors...

But to put the idea into the blender, even if you used the wrong stake the V-8 distributors can just be twisted one way or the other to make up for for the offset anyway...

Hey, guess what? The FSM is a friend. It states this in the electrical section, on distributer repair. After I posted I thougth to take a look.

The problem would not be timing, it is the rotor phasing. You would want the spark to occur while the rotor is close to the cap terminal, or you can wind up with cross fire.

Sounds like an interesting experiment, I might have to make up one of each and see what the effects are on the dizzy machine if they are 'mis phased'.... I wonder at what speed the crossfire would occur...

Stay tuned...

I just saw a reluctor that has three (I think) grooves instead of just one. It's to allow changes in reluctor phasing. Now if I could just remember where I saw it!

I also noticed in an MSD distributor that the teeth on the reluctor were wider and flat, rather than delta shaped like MOPAR used. Would that give longer spark duration and/or sharper on and off events?

There is a thread in FABO on reluctor phasing on a 318:
