Post subject:  steering shaft/column question

Are there bushings that go around the steering shaft inside the steering column in a slant six? The jacket seal is gone and I can some round plastic (?) things around the shaft. They don't appear to be doing anything because I can slide them up and down the shaft.

At the top of the column near the turn signal switch there should be a bearing.

Over on A bodies only some have installed a bearing in place of the plastic lower bushing.Early A's don't even have the bushing. Alot of talk on there about that a bearing is not nessary and the upper bearing of the steering box does the job. I just took apart my 64 Dart column and it has only a dust/heat cover at the base of the column.Or I should say what's left of one.I also have been told that the upper bearing by the turn signal switch is still available from Chrysler. Don't know for sure.

The More Bearings in the steering shaft the better.

If I was rebuilding one I would probably retrofit a67-up Lower steering shaft bearing onto / into the 63-66 shaft for safety :-)

Bing, we never asked,What year ya workin on ? If the 67 up colapsable column with a 1'' shaft. The bearing to replace the $80 dollar plastic (reproduction)bearing/bushing is a BCA#ER16 or SER205-16 with a price range from $5 to 10 bucks.

I just bought new repro steering shaft seals at over $50.00 each. But Greg posted the answer to a question I hadn't asked here yet. At first look, I see lots of sealed flanged bearings for lots less money.
I want a flanged sealed bearing with a 3/4" I.D. and an O.D. to match the steering column (which I haven't measured yet). Or a '67 - up bearing that Greg mentioned, if the later column is the same I.D. as my 64ragtop.
Any help (sources, part #s, guidance) greatly appreciated. Thanks!
