Post subject: | Jacking a Rear End |
A couple weeks ago I called my father to ask him the proper way to jack up the rear end since it was my first time doing so. He told me not to put the jack on the differential but to instead on the axle housing close to the diff and place the stand as far from the diff as possible. How do you guys jack up the rear end? |

Under the pumpkin, under the leaf spring mount, on the frame box channel, from the bumper, under the front leaf spring mount... |

If using the small 2 ton bottle jack or pump jack then under the axle tubes or shock plates would work best...If you are using a 3+ ton mechanics style jack put it under the differential and go for it.... The thing to be careful of is letting the jack down or the car shifting if the cup isn't placed right... Good luck, -D.Idiot |

I used my 2.5 Ton floor jack on the axle housing near the diff when I changed the diff oil. I headed his words of caution but have been told that putting it on the diff is fine from anyone I've asked. My jack has a large cup with notches in the wall and that jazz. Good to know I can lift it just once, should save a little bit of time when I go under there to check my exhaust this weekend. |

I think that what your dad was saying is, to not put the jack out on the nose or body of the center section, but to put the jack under the center banjo,, which is good advice that is a good place to lift, then put the jack stands under the axle tubes.. |

I wouldn't think about going under it with just the jack, it's from harbor freight... |

I wonder if H.F. 's legendary quality control is creating a new generation of folks using jack stands? I do buy and use their tools, but the only H.F. device I really depend on is the ANVIL!! BC |

I would not trust the only body that I have with any jack,, if you are under the car, put it on standsremember, the jack does not have to fail for you to get flattened. A jack picks up from one point, the balance could change and allow the vehicle to slide off the jack and fall. With two stands properly placed, the raised vehicle will be more stable. |

Does your 78 Aspen have bumper jack slots? Could always look for one of those. I like my bumper jack. Still use jack stands for sure. Put a block behind any wheels that are still on the ground. |

Bumper Jacks are crap.(Hi-lift maybe?) Is there really anyone here that has been under a car without jackstands? Trusting a Jack? (I really don't want to know) |

I would never get under a car with out it being on stands, even if I had some platinum coated $800 jack. I thought I should clear that up. My Aspen has the bumper jack the car sold with but I honesty have no clue how it even works. I read about it in the owner's manual although i did not quite understand it. |

It works like crap. They were cheap stamped ratchet mechanisms that used the tire iron as the operating lever. There's nothing like feeling the car start to shift on gravel while it's on a bumper jack. Or "ka-chak, ka-chunk, ka-chak, ka-THUMP!" when the jack fails completely & drops the car.
