Torsion bar boots, are they pretty much a straight forward replacement? Just unbolt put new boot on and re-tighten bolts.........

Post subject:  Uhhh..not exactly...

For an A-body that is:

Jack up front of car.
Put on jack stands.
remove front wheels.
Back off the LCA stud nuts.
Measure how deep the T-bar adujsting bolt is in the toggle.
Unload the LCA by removing the torsion bar toggle bolt (3/4" socket).
Remove the toggle and allow the torsion bar to unwind.
Remove torsion bar spring clips from the rear anchors.
If you had removed, cleaned and regreased them during a previous suspension over haul they may come out with a little coaxing, or prying a bit on the LCA...if they haven't been serviced, you will need a home made T-bar remover so you can hammer the t-bar out o the LCA receiver.

Remove boot, install new boot, use about a two finger "dip" of multi-purpose grease to pack the boot, and reassemble in reverse. If you ogt a good measurement the ride height will be correct when rewinding the bolts back to their original position.

Be advised- If you don't back off the LCA stud nuts allowing the LCA to be loose you can damage the LCA bushings when readjusting the T-bar settings.

I think its my boot, but nit quite sure? A bushing that's at the front of the lower control arm with a big washer over its worn out and coming apart? Any ideas what its called and where to get a replacement? Thanks for the replies.....

I think you are talking about the lower control arm bushing.

OK Lou, that might be it, my passenger side one is coming apart and needs replacement. Do I have to remove the torsion bars to replace these...? Thanks again.....

You have to pull the whole LCA off so you can press the bushing stud out and have fun getting the shell out...(about that time most guys will take it to a machine shop if you aren't ready for this kind of thing). There are a few posts with other ways to do it if you have a bench vise and some hardware.

It's also advised to do both sides, since the logic would bear that if one side goes, the other side isn't far behind- or the resulting realignment might put a bit of stress on the other side and it will fail out.

If interested in going to poly for these bushings (you just use a torch to burn out the old rubber, clean up the metal leaving the shells in place and inserting the poly insert), I have a pair of Energy Suspension LCA Poly Inserts I'd make you a deal on.

The comment about the big washer makes me think you might be talking about the strut rod bushing. If you look at the outer (wheel) end of the lower control arm, there is a ~ 1/2" rod that runs forward to up by the front bumper. That strut rod has a bushing covered by a huge washer at the front of it.

It's about the same process to get to it as the LCA bushing, but you can replace that one yourself. Just trying to make sure we steer you in the right direction.

Here's a write up with some pics detailing the LCA bushing replacement:

Hope that helps!

I think it's Time to Find a Factory Service manual..

It should help clarify the vocabulary and processes you are asking about.
