Just want to make sure im not missing anything. I've received some advice, just want to make sure I don't leave anything out. Valve lash set cold to .023 and .013 just to ballpark. I know I will need to adjust hot later. 5w30 oil? Also got some heavy duty Lucas to mix in Pour oil into oil pump Teaspoon of oil down spark plug tubes (not really sure the reason for this) Crank it for a while without spark plugs to turn engine over a bit Put spark plugs back in, and start it up Recommendations for cam break in? It's not a stock cam, but was told by the builder that it's close to stock. |

Skip the Lucas, use some diesel 10w30, or 15w40 oil, something with some zinc in it, or get some break in oil, thats made for breaking in engine. I use the 15w40 myself, I also crank with out plugs untill oil presure shows on gauge, should come up with about 30 seconds cranking, install plugs, try to have dist. timing close, fire it up get RPM over 2000 and keep it above 2000 for 20-30 minutes keep an eye on temp. don,t let it overheat, if temp gets over 220 shut it down, let it cool down |

Today was the big day. Well, ran into a problem. (Don't we always?) I'm getting no fuel to the carb. It appears the fuel pump on this motor I bought doesn't pump. Pulled lines to see if there was any gas going through at all, and nothing at the pump. I've got the fuel pump on my old motor still. Can I swap the pump without having to pull the motor again? |

Yes just make sure the pump is on the proper side of the cam. Richard |

You can just pull the fuell line off the carb and stick that into a large bottle & crank the motor to see if it pumps. Other things to look at are the sock on the end of the pick up tube in the tank, also check your filters. Good Luck. |

Good news guys, I got it started for about 10 minutes. I was running into issues getting the distributor in the right position. At one point, during the 10 minute run it was close, but the distributor was turned (without the bolt) way too far. If i tried to correct it, the timing mark would be way off and then the engine would die. I tried several times to get the distributor positioned right, but nothing seemed to work and by this point it was dark out and I could hardly see anything so decided to pack it in. Also, I think I've got an exhaust leak from the intake/exhaust mounting area. So, I think I'm going to have to pull that and see what the problem is there. |
