I've been following this site for a while now, as nobody I've met seems to know a thing about the slant sixes and there is some really valuable stuff here. I wanted to ask your advice about the carb on my Dart. Since I've been driving it (it sat for 18 years), it has almost always wanted to stall at stops. Even after the rebuild, it still liked to stall. The motor had a slight miss in it, and I could never get the thing to idle at a low enough speed. I've taken it apart and cleaned it, checked the float level, changed all the vacuum lines, replaced the points, rotor, condenser, and plugs, checked the valves and timing, but to no avail. On my most recent dismantling, I found large amounts of gasket sealer that the guys at Napa told me to use for the carb base plate in various vacuum lines and between gaskets. Also, the power valve lever had completely broke off, and I discovered a 60 degree hole drilled into the rear/driver's side of the carb body that had been plugged by some sort of epoxy/resin. I think that this carb may be on it's last legs. What would you recommend? I am going to school in Klamath Falls, OR, and am in need of my car. Several people I've talked to have told me to go with Carter, or at least a 2 barrel, and more still have said to just swap it with a 318. Any help greatly appreciated!! Jake |

I would replace it with another 1920 and save yours for parts. They are very simple carbs and generally run for ever if not tampered with. Sounds like yours could use a few new parts. For overall mileage the 1920 is a good carb. I am still running mine! Click on the red link to view pictures. What year is your car and engine? Does your car have a PCV? or is the old down draft style? Sometimes a worn PCV can cause a heck of a vacuum leak causing the misfire and sputtering. |

I went through two reman 1920s and a reman carter bbs till i found a holley 2280 a two barrel. However you cant just put a two barrel on a one barrel manifold i had to monkey with it to bolt up and seal. Some more info is needed. You shouldnt use any gasket stuff on the carb gaskets. Does it die as you let off the gas or when you press the brake peddle? Whats the vaccume at idle? Whats the cylinder compresion? Other than the stalling at a stop does it have any other problems driving like a stumble on take off or anything like that. |

Have you check the valve lash settings lately? Make sure the valve lash is correct becaust that has a big influance on the idle quality. DD |

As Doc said, check valve lash.I've done it twice: first time tried to set them 0.010 and 0.020, and replaced plugs for NGK zfr5n, and after that I had idle problems. 2 weeks ago tried new spark plugs (NGK GR4) and lashed at 0.012, 0.024 (check http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=72139, that is the set for trucks) and the idle really improved (maybe too loose, but I'll enjoy it for a while before going back to "tighter" lash) BTW, I'm not suggesting you to change the spark plugs, but I need to disclose all changes I did, maybe the new spark plugs helped too. |
